Abstract: This paper looks at the concept of Sustainable Urban Development, from a global viewpoint, providing specific information from past and ongoing research and projects. There is initially discussion around the popularity of urbanization in recent years and the subsequent unsustainability of this trend representing a dire need for a change to be made in development systems. Particularly, this paper enforces the need for our world to start adopting a holistic and systematic approach at all stages of design development ensuring sustainability and strategic fulfilment of all stakeholder interests. It also includes certain important environmental procedures which have been a key instrument in many developments, such as Triple Bottom Line (TBL) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). This paper also draws focus to a key example of a sustainably developed city, i.e., Singapore, which has taken into account many frameworks and concepts mentioned throughout the paper proving to be a strong example for other cities to look up to and learn from.
