Abstract: Dumping of refuse in poorly sited dumpsites is a major problem in Nigeria, especially in rural areas, and this poses a potential hazard to the health of people around and the environment. These dumpsites provide a suitable breeding site for many microorganisms, flies, mosquitoes, hookworm, and some rodents which transmit diseases. Therefore, the study was designed to determine the composition of refuse at LEA primary school dumpsite, Woodwox dumpsite, Solid rock refuse dump, Sector F refuse dump, Tudun wada refuse dumpsite in Lugbe and the effects of the dumps on the health of the residents. Data were collected from residents through the use of a self-administered questionnaire and field observation to closely study the composition of the dumps.
