Abstract: Water pollution is one of the most prevalent problems affecting people throughout the world, while adsorption is the most widely used method to remove the contaminants from water. In this present study, a series of eco-friendly Sodium salt of carboxymethyl celluloseStarch-Gelatin hydrogels were prepared using Citric acid as the chemical crosslinker by changing biopolymers and crosslinker percentages. Characteristics of the hydrogels were investigated by swelling test and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). Swelling behavior was tested in cold and hot water, acids, alkalies salt water etc. Water uptake by the hydrogel increased when starch concentration increased but decreased when gelatin and crosslinker concentration increased. Further, the hydrogel was evaluated as a bio adsorbent for the removal of dyes, namely Crystal violet and Rhodamine B from water. Maximum dye adsorption was seen for crystal violet. Metal adsorption was also studied using copper sulphate solution.
